Greening Godalming picks up pace

After the initial launch event a month ago the second event - a screening of 'The Age of Stupid' - built on the initial success with a well attended and interested crowd. The film raised many questions around humanity's use of carbon and the pollution it is causing.

Not a light topic for a Monday night it must be said but most of the crowd stayed on afterwards to discuss the film, the issues and their relevance to Godalming.

One point raised in the discussion went to the heart of what Greening Godalming is about: how we can act as a community to make a difference.

Well it neatly ties in with the '9 Godalming Challenges' chosen at the Greening Godalming Public Meeting on 30 October. Taking these actions in our everyday lives will help us to reduce our carbon footprint, save money and conserve wildlife.

So what are the challenges? Here's a little reminder...

1. Walk or cycle if the journey is less than a mile
2. Turn off taps when brushing teeth
3. Turn the thermostat down by 1oC
4. Boil only the amount of water needed
5. Turn off lights when you leave a room
6. Turn off all standbys
7. Top up loft insulation to a depth of 270 mm
8. Reduce each normal shower time by one minute
9. Draught proof around doors and windows and cover letter boxes and keyholes

Thanks must go to Waverley Council for use of the hall, the film society for running the event and Guildford and Waverley Friends of the Earth who jointly screened it with us.
